For thousands of years, Houpu has taken root deep in the mountains, absorbing the spiritual energy of the earth, accumulating rich medicinal fragrance, and serving human health.
Houpu is one of the major Chinese medicinal herbs, mainly distributed in 12 provinces (regions, cities) including Zhejiang, Fujian, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Guangxi, Chongqing, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guizhou. In plant taxonomy, Magnolia officinalis has always been classified under the Magnoliaceae Magnolia genus, including Magnolia officinalis (original subspecies) and Magnolia officinalis (subspecies). Recently, scholars have merged two subspecies of Magnolia into a single species of Magnolia genus.
Houpu has a medicinal history of over 2000 years. It uses bark, root bark, and flower buds as medicine, and has the effects of promoting dampness, warming and relieving pain, lowering adverse reactions and relieving asthma. It is mainly used to treat gastrointestinal diseases.
In the spring of 2003, during the outbreak of SARS, Dayuan Drink played an important role in prevention and control. In the fierce novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic since 2019, "Dayuan Drink" has become popular again. "Da Yuan Yin" comes from Wu Youke's "Wen Yi Lun" in the Ming Dynasty. It is suitable for the early and middle stages of epidemics and has the effect of "dispelling depression and dampness, clearing heat and nourishing yin". Houpu is an important component of the "Dayuan Yin" formula, and is also an important traditional Chinese medicine formula in formulas such as "Sanxiao Yin" and "Chengqi Yangrong Tang" in this treatise.
