Duhuo Parasitic Decoction is a creative formula created by Sun Simiao of the Tang Dynasty. It can be found in Volume 8 of the "Essential Prescriptions for Preparing Urgent Qianjin" (Volume 8, Part 2) and is a well-known formula commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine clinical practice. The pills were developed based on the original formula.
This formula is composed of 15 traditional Chinese medicines, including Angelica sinensis, Sangparasitism, Gentiana macrophylla, Fangfeng, Asarum, Angelica sinensis, Paeonia lactiflora, Chuanxiong, Dried Rehmannia glutinosa, Eucommia ulmoides, Achyranthes bidentata, Ginseng, Poria cocos, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, and Cinnamomum cassia. It has the effects of dispelling wind and dampness, relieving pain and obstruction, benefiting the liver and kidneys, and nourishing qi and blood. Indicating wind cold dampness bi, it belongs to liver and kidney deficiency, with insufficient qi and blood. Symptoms include cold pain in the lower back and knees, poor flexion and extension of limbs or numbness, fear of cold and warmth, pale tongue coating, and weak pulse.
Due to its good therapeutic effect in clinical treatment, this formula has been highly praised by medical practitioners throughout history. The Song Dynasty's "Treatise on Three Causes and One Disease Syndrome", "Compilation of Zhu's Collected Medical Prescriptions", the Ming Dynasty's "Zhengzong of Surgery" and "Shuli Li Li", and the Qing Dynasty's "Examination of Medical Prescriptions", "Collection and Explanation of Medical Prescriptions", "Jinjian of Medical Prescriptions", "Cut and Use of Formulas", "Easy Reading of Formulas" and other books all record this prescription. The modern "Collection of Prescriptions for Traditional Chinese Medicine in China" also includes this prescription.

Joint pain lasts for a long time, caused by wind cold and dampness bi. Lack of liver and kidney in the body, deficiency of qi and blood, pain in both knee joints, and wandering to the ankles, lower back pain, accompanied by low fever, lack of food, painful facial features, thin and white coating, pale tongue, and thin veins. Blood routine examination shows an increase in white blood cells, a high anti O value, and an increase in red blood cell sedimentation rate. Treatment is suitable for dispelling rheumatism and nourishing qi and blood. Taking Duhuo Parasitic Soup with modifications, you can add medicines such as black snake, ground turtle worm, millennium health, Weilingxian, processed Sichuan Aconitum, and processed grass Aconitum. 10-20 doses, fever subsided, pain significantly reduced, swelling subsided, joint function improved and achieved results.
2 Rheumatoid arthritis
Long term back pain, deficiency of both liver and kidney, insufficient qi and blood, swelling, pain and deformation of finger joints, increased pain when encountering cold, and low fever, lack of food, pale complexion, thin and white coating, pale tongue, and weak pulse. Blood routine examination: positive for rheumatoid factor and increased white blood cell count. Treatment is suitable for tonifying qi and blood, dispelling wind and dampness, and unblocking meridians. Taking modified Duhuo Parasitic Decoction and adding herbs such as Chicken Blood Vine, Prepared Sichuan Crow, Prepared Grass Crow, and Black Shoot Snake to the formula has a certain therapeutic effect.
Rheumatic sciatica
One side of the leg and foot has severe pain like a thorn, which is located between the muscles, muscles, and bones. When pressed, the pain area is not red or swollen. When in pain, it groans incessantly and is difficult to tolerate. It prefers warm heat, but when in heat, the pain is relieved. The coating is white and greasy, the tongue is red, and the pulse is smooth. It is advisable to treat rheumatism and strengthen muscles and bones. Taking Duhuo Parasitic Soup with medicines such as Sichuan Aconitum, Grass Aconitum, and Stir fried Atractylodes has a good therapeutic effect. Chronic lower back and leg pain
Pain in the lower back and legs that persists for years, with insufficient liver and kidney function in the body; Qi and blood are both deficient, with a sharp increase in pain when cold occurs. The complexion is dull, the mind is tired, and there is little appetite. The coating is white, the tongue is light, and the pulse is thin. It is advisable to tonify the liver and kidney, and eliminate rheumatism. Taking Duhuo Parasitic Pills or Decoction has a certain therapeutic effect.
5. Polio
Fever does not subside, muscle pain, crying and restlessness, weakness and weakness in the lower limbs, and poor mobility. This is caused by the invasion of dampness and heat, blocking qi and blood, and loss of nourishment in muscles and tendons. To treat dampness and unblock collaterals, promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis. Taking modified Duhuo Parasitic Decoction, this formula removes Eucommia ulmoides, ginseng, Achyranthes bidentata, Cinnamomum cassia, white peony is prone to red peony, and adds herbs such as Atractylodes macrocephala, papaya, Cinnamomum cassia, Weilingxian, Sanqi, Xanthium sibiricum, and Yiren, which have a very good therapeutic effect.
Chronic Brucellosis
Hot flashes and sweating, joint soreness, especially severe pain in the large joints, resembling cone-shaped spikes, recurrent, weak body, insufficient liver and kidney, deficiency of both qi and blood, prolonged muscle atrophy, joint stiffness, red tongue, white and greasy coating, and numerous pulse strings. Blood test examination: Serum agglutination test and complement binding test are positive. My whole body is weak, and I feel dry and have red urine. It is suitable for treating rheumatism, strengthening muscles and bones, supplementing qi and blood, and benefiting the liver and kidneys. Taking Duhuo Parasitic Pills (i.e. removing cinnamon in this formula, adding cinnamon twigs, Chuanduan, Yinchaihu, Xiangfu, and refining honey as pills), the clinical symptoms alleviate or disappear after taking, and the serum agglutination test is negative and effective.
7. Treatment of temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome
Pain in the temporomandibular joint, difficulty opening the mouth, caused by wind and cold invasion, white coating, and tight pulse. Treatment is suitable for dispelling wind and cold, unblocking meridians, and nourishing qi and blood. Take Duhuo Parasitic Soup with modifications. It is recommended to treat rheumatism, nourish qi and blood, and take Duhuo Parasitic Decoction, which is effective.
In the original formula of Duhuo Parasitic Tang, raw Rehmannia was used, but later medical practitioners switched to cooked Rehmannia for better results. The dosage of Asarum in this formula is not large, and its therapeutic effect is inferior when removed. Asarum has the function of promoting yin and yang, relieving rheumatism and relieving pain. It is necessary for previous researchers to study its dosage. For those with severe and mild pain in the limbs, the dosage should be small, while for those with severe pain, the dosage should be large (preferably 3-5g). A small amount of Asarum can warm the meridians, while a large amount can have analgesic effects.
A New Explanation of Duhuo Parasitic Soup
The Bazhen Tang (removing Atractylodes macrocephala) contained in this formula can regulate and replenish qi and blood, improve physical fitness, and enhance the body's ability to resist rheumatism. Among them, dried Rehmannia has a more nourishing and heart strengthening effect.
This formula removes mulberry parasites and adds Huangqi, Chuanduan, and ginger, known as Sanbi Tang. It has a more significant effect on warming the meridians and strengthening the waist. Beginners should not neglect its clinical practical value just because this method is well-known to the world.
The author, Zeng Zhiyi, a 53 year old male patient surnamed Chen, has been suffering from lower back and leg joint pain for more than 20 years, with recurrence every year. The night before the consultation, I woke up and urinated. Suddenly, I had a pain in the right sciatic nerve and couldn't walk, falling to the ground. The patient moaned and screamed, complaining of unbearable body pain, especially in the waist and right leg. His face is pale, his mouth is not thirsty, he is afraid of wind and cold, his tongue is pale with white and greasy coating, and his pulse is floating and tight. Check for any redness, heat, or swelling in the joints.
Immediately use the modified Duhuo Parasitic Soup: 10 grams of Qiang Duhuo (each), 18 grams of Sang Parasitic, 6 grams of Qin Gentiana, 6 grams of Fangfeng (each), 10 grams of Quandanggui, 5 grams of Bai Shao, 15 grams of Mulberry, 5 grams of Chuanxiong, 20 grams of Taizi Shen, 10 grams of Eucommia ulmoides, 10 grams of Achyranthes bidentata, and 6 grams of roasted licorice. At the same time, cooperate with acupuncture and moxibustion.
After three days, if the patient's pain subsides, they can wake up, and after five days, they can take care of themselves in terms of food, drink, and daily life. Later, the original formula followed the evidence and continued to take more than 20 doses to recover. Follow up for three years, everything went as usual without any recurrence.
I have used this formula to treat 30 cases of wind cold dampness bi (including those with a tendency towards dampness and heat). After follow-up, 20 cases have fully recovered, and 7 cases have recently been effective, with 3 cases ineffective.
