2. Plant morphology
Evergreen trees. The plant is 20 meters tall. The bark is light gray. Branches spread out, with flattened branches arranged in a compound leaf shape. The leaves are all scaly, measuring 1-3 millimeters in length, and grow alternately. Monoecious, with seven spherical flowers at the top of the branch. Male bulbous flowers have 6 pairs of interacting stamens and 2-4 anthers. The female bulbous flower has 4 pairs of interacting opposite pearl scales. Only the middle two pairs of pearl scales each have 1-2 ovules. The cones mature at that time and crack when ripe. They are ovoid in shape, with a diameter of 1.5-2 centimeters, and have 4 pairs of scales. They are woody, nearly flat, with a curved hook shaped tip on the upper back. There are 1-2 seeds on each of the scales in the middle. The seed is oval in shape, about 4 millimeters long. The flowering period is from April to May, and the cones mature in October of the same year.
