Tranquil emptiness, true qi follows from it, spirit is guarded, and illness is always peaceful—— Huangdi Neijing, Suwen, Ancient Innocence Theory No.1
The ancient theory of innocence in the Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon states: "Tranquil emptiness, true qi follows from it, spirit is guarded within, and illness is always safe." This sentence means that a person's spirit is "serene emptiness. 'Tian' refers to tranquility, 'Dan' refers to detachment, and 'Nothingness' refers to emptiness, relaxation, and emptiness. A person's mood can often maintain a state of emptiness, emptiness, tranquility, and emptiness. At this time, the body's vitality will slowly fill, soften, and flow smoothly, which is called' true qi follows'. The so-called 'true qi' refers to the vitality of the body, that is, energy. We know that if we get sick, our body can slowly recover through rest, and this ability is called self-healing ability. The source of energy for this ability is what traditional Chinese medicine calls true qi, also known as vital energy. So, when a person's true qi is abundant and unobstructed, many diseases can heal on their own.
We have seen many children getting sick, especially after catching a cold, which may take one, two, or three days to recover, while some elderly people may not recover from a cold for a month, even a month and a half, or even two months. They may also have lingering cough and even trigger asthma, etc. What's the reason? It's because children, the younger they are, the more abundant their vitality and true qi are. However, as people age, with the depletion and loss of vitality, their self-healing ability will decline in old age, which is what traditional Chinese medicine calls true qi deficiency.
So the method to restore the true yang qi is very simple, using the method in the Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon, which is "tranquility and emptiness". To achieve this, no matter how old you are, your true yang qi will slowly nourish, develop, fill, soften, and flow smoothly, known as "true qi follows".
So what does the second sentence mean by 'spiritual inner defense'? Spirit "refers to our essence, qi, and spirit, which do not dissipate, nor are they consumed or lost externally. The so-called 'internal defense' means not seeking outside. Name, color, wealth, food, sleep, wine, color, wealth, qi, five desires, and six dust, these are all external pursuits. The more you seek, the greater your consumption, the more your spirit disperses. The more your spirit disperses, the worse your body becomes, and diseases are easier to come and harder to cure. On the other hand, in Buddhism, it is called 'as if not moving' when the mind is in a state of mind that remains calm and stable. With this state of mind, our essence, qi, and spirit are abundant, and our qi and blood are balanced and regulated. In this case, diseases are less likely to occur, and it is called 'as if not moving'.
